Years of repetitive taring and sub standard repairs to Yankee gutter on this Historic Building on Wooster Square in New Haven, CT.
A typical slate roof with inadequate repairs.
After years of unsightly repairs many slate roofs look pretty bad.
One of the most rewarding things about what we do is preserving and bringing back these vintage roofs to their original beauty.
Before you let someone talk you into stripping off your slate roof call Tarantino Roofing and Coppersmith.
New copper gutters with 2 systems holding them to the house, not just 1 like every other roofer does.

Yankee Gutters
                                                                                        Report

Yankee gutters or built-in gutters as they're sometimes referred to as were a common feature on many older historic buildings.
Usually lined with sheet metal like tin plated steel or copper.
Yankee gutters are built into the cornice of the building.
A very aesthetic way that is functional attractive way to collect rainwater as it drains off buildings.
Yankee gutters also are not prone to getting ripped off from ice in heavy snow.
But when the sheet metal pan gets worn or develops a crack, the damage can be dramatic.

A sad, but all too common occurrence when someone with a slate roof seeks to find a qualified craftsman to work on their roof.
Many times I get a call to look at a slate roof.
When I arrive at the person's home, I see samples of asphalt slate have been left there.
The homeowner has been convinced by some roofing company that they have to have their slate roof removed.
I'll ask two questions, do you like the way it looks?
And, where is leaking?
The answer usually is I love the way it looks, but I keep having the same leak repaired.
